Federal government started its first low rent housing program in Alabama under the supervision of PWD department.this program was a part of national recovery act .Congress enacted this housing act in early 1937.
The objectives of these housing authorities was to evaluate the housing problems and making recommendations to solve these problem then AAHRA(The Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities ) is working for providing decent,safe and sanitary housing for the low income citizens of Alabama
AAHRA has different comities to perform different task related with the housing and welfare of citizens of Alabama.

Functions
The main function of AAHRA is public housing.
Applicant can submit application on any weekday ,from monday to friday subject to the folowing eligibility criteria:
Be 19 years of age or older
Social Security cards, birth certificates and picture identification on adults
marriage certification or divorce decree
child custody papers
The process comprises of
Criminal background check through local police or FBI
Former landlord reference
Credit history
Verification of Income
Rent is based on Adjusted Income or flat rent
Allowances are also deducted from gross income for the purpose of:
Dependents
Full-time students over the age of 18
Child care expense when parents are working
Ongoing medical expenses for Disabled/Handicapped/Elderly that are paid out of pocket
Waiting Period is around 2 – 4 Weeks for verification
